History of Establishment

WAPID-SS was founded by a group of unaccompanied minors and orphans who fled Chukudum, in 1999 in the then Sudan for Northern Uganda in search of refuge and educational opportunities. While in northern Uganda, they faced numerous challenges including: serious illnesses; extreme inequalities (abject poverty, restricted access to quality healthcare services, unequal access to quality and inclusive educational opportunities, injustice and human rights abuses); lack of awareness on critical issues; unbiased leadership and discrimination based on ethnic groupings. Although life in Northern Uganda was very difficult and challenging, the unaccompanied minors and orphans learned lessons that inspired them to come back home and work with the youth in the community to fight extreme inequalities using the three pillars of Poverty alleviation; Education and awareness raising; and Health service provisions, supported by local advocacy. The founders believe that true community transformation can only be achieved when people are aware of the critical issues around them, when they are healthy and armed with knowledge to fight against Poverty, Ignorance and Diseases. WAPID-SS therefore believes that, the real transformation starts with the changing of the mindset
